AREAS OF PRACTICE

Relationships & Life Transitions

Relationships shape how everything else feels. Whether you’re stuck in the same patterns with a partner, navigating tension in your family, or facing a big change like a separation, a loss, a move or a new chapter in life, Harbourside therapists offer a steady space to make sense of it and find a way forward, on your own or together.

Approaches

Evidence-Based Approaches for Relationships and Change

When Relationships and Change Feel Heavy

Why Talking It Out at Home Isn’t Always Enough

And What Helps

Every relationship has hard seasons, and every life has transitions. It becomes harder when the same patterns keep repeating or a change leaves you feeling unsteady for a long time.

People often reach out about:

  • Couples conflict: the same arguments on repeat, feeling distant, or trust that’s been shaken.

  • Separation and divorce: working through the end of a relationship, or deciding what comes next.

  • Family tension: strain between parents and teens, siblings or extended family.

  • Communication and boundaries: people-pleasing, saying yes when you mean no, or not feeling heard.

  • Grief and loss: the death of someone close, or the loss of a role, a relationship or a future you expected.

  • Big life changes: becoming a parent, a new job or career shift, retirement, a move, or a change in health.

When emotions run high, even caring conversations can slide back into the same old patterns. Each person ends up defending their side, and the real needs underneath get lost.

Therapy slows things down. A neutral, trained therapist helps you see the pattern you’re caught in, understand what each person needs, and practise new ways of responding, whether you come on your own or together.

If you're in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 any time. In an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.

The process

What to Expect in Therapy at Harbourside

Whether you come on your own, as a couple or as a family, Harbourside therapists keep sessions balanced, respectful and paced to you. No one is there to take sides.

1

Understanding the Pattern

You and your therapist look at what's happening, how each person experiences it, and the cycle that keeps repeating.

2

Setting Shared Goals

Together you name what you want to change, whether that's less conflict, better communication or finding your feet after a big change.

3

Practising New Ways

You try new ways of talking, listening and responding, in session and in everyday life, at a pace that feels manageable.

4

Moving Forward

As things steady, the focus shifts to keeping the progress going and feeling more confident with whatever comes next.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my partner won't come to therapy?

Individual therapy can still make a real difference. Understanding your own patterns and how you respond can shift the way a relationship works, and some partners choose to join later.

Do you work with families?

Yes. Harbourside works with families where children are 14 or older, helping with conflict, communication and adjusting to change together.

Does couples therapy work online?

Yes. Many couples find video sessions easier to fit into busy lives, and talking from home can make it feel more natural to work on real, everyday patterns.

How long are couples and family sessions?

Couples and family sessions are available as 60 or 90 minutes. Longer sessions give more time to work through things together. See the fees page for details.
