Getting started
How do I know which therapist is right for me?
Start with what you're struggling with. Find a Therapist shows who at Harbourside works in each area, and you can book with any of them directly. Not sure where to begin? Send a message and Harbourside's clinic coordinator will help you choose.
What happens after I book?
- Book your session online through Jane.
- Complete your intake forms. They're sent to you automatically, based on what you're seeking support for.
- Attend your first session, which includes an initial consultation or assessment as appropriate.
- Therapy begins, shaped around your needs and goals.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. Harbourside also welcomes referrals from physicians, employee assistance programs (EAPs), WorkSafeBC, ICBC, the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) and government agencies.
Who does Harbourside work with?
Adults, teens 14 and older, couples, and families with children 14 and older.
Can teens attend therapy without a parent?
Under BC's Infants Act, a young person under 19 can consent to therapy on their own when their therapist confirms they understand it and it's in their best interest. Otherwise, a parent or guardian's consent is needed.
How are sessions held?
All sessions are virtual, by secure video or phone. You'll need a private space where you can talk freely, a phone or computer, and a stable internet connection for video.
Where are services available?
Harbourside currently serves clients in British Columbia, with plans to expand across Canada.
How quickly will I hear back?
Messages sent through the contact form are answered within two business days. They go to Harbourside's admin inbox, where they may be read by the administrative team, all of whom work under a confidentiality agreement. To book straight away, you can choose a time online through Jane.

Is therapy covered by insurance?
Many extended health plans cover therapy with a Registered Clinical Counsellor, and every Harbourside therapist is an RCC. Coverage depends on your plan, so check with your provider before your first session.
Is your therapy related to a work or disability claim? Please let the team know before you book, so approval can be arranged in advance.
Does Harbourside direct bill?
Direct billing is coming soon. In the meantime, you'll receive a receipt after each session to submit to your extended health provider.
How do I pay?
Payment is by credit card through Jane, and a card on file is required for all sessions. Harbourside does not accept debit or e-transfer.
What is the cancellation policy?
Please give at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice, and missed sessions, are charged the full session fee.
Are reduced fees available?
Harbourside considers reduced fees case by case. If cost is a concern, reach out to talk it through.
About the care
What kind of therapy does Harbourside offer?
There's no one-size-fits-all approach. Harbourside therapists are integrative, bringing together evidence-informed approaches based on who you are, what you're experiencing and what you need. Your goals guide the work. Your therapist brings the expertise.
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. Many people come in because something just doesn't feel right, or they're going through a hard stretch. You don't need a diagnosis or a label to get support.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you're working on and your goals. Some concerns respond well to shorter, structured therapy, while others take more time. Your therapist reviews progress with you regularly so you can decide together what comes next.
What does "collective" mean for me?
When you work with a Harbourside therapist, you have the collective thinking of the whole team behind you. Therapists consult with one another so your care draws on the expertise that makes the most sense for you. Your name and identifying details are never shared.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, with some limits set by law and professional standards. Read Privacy and Confidentiality for details.
What if Harbourside isn't the right fit?
If the team isn't the best match for what you need, Harbourside will help you find the right therapist through its professional networks.
Do you offer clinical supervision for therapists?
Yes. Individual and group supervision is available for registered counsellors, new graduates, students and pre-registration clinicians. Learn about clinical supervision.
Is Harbourside a crisis service?
No. Harbourside does not provide emergency services, and therapists may not be available to respond right away. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 9-8-8, 24 hours a day. Young people can reach Kids Help Phone any time by texting CONNECT to 686868 or calling 1-800-668-6868. If you're in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.
