AREAS OF PRACTICE

Occupational Stress & Injury

For first responders, healthcare and other frontline workers, the weight of the job can keep your body and mind on high alert long after your shift ends. Being on edge off duty, emotional waves and feeling disconnected from the people you love are your nervous system’s natural adaptation to demanding work. You don’t have to carry it alone.

Understanding Occupational Stress and Injury

Why “Pushing Through” Doesn’t Work

And What Does

Frontline work brings stress that builds over time, in body and mind, and it often follows you home. It can show up as:

  • Operational stress: burnout, exhaustion and physical tension from shift work and high-intensity situations.

  • Anxiety and hyperarousal: feeling constantly on edge, easily startled off duty, or unable to wind down.

  • Depression and flatness: a persistent heaviness, loss of interest and emotional numbness.

  • Isolation: pulling away from family, friends and activities you used to enjoy.

  • Identity challenges: struggling to separate who you are from the job, on days off or through career and life transitions.

  • Intrusive memories: flashbacks, nightmares, distressing images, and avoiding reminders.

  • Shame and guilt: heavy self-criticism, performance pressure and self-blame.

Stress and trauma are stored deep in the nervous system, and when something triggers them, they bypass rational thought. That’s why willpower and “just getting on with it” often stop working.

Real recovery takes a body-and-mind approach, with therapists who understand the realities of demanding, high-stakes work.

If you're in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 any time. In an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my employer know I'm in therapy?

No. Therapy at Harbourside is confidential. Reports go to an employee assistance program, insurer or referrer only when they're requested and you've given permission. Your therapist will explain the limits of confidentiality in your first session.

Can I come through WorkSafeBC or my EAP?

Yes. Harbourside accepts referrals from WorkSafeBC and employee assistance programs. Coverage depends on your claim or plan, so it's worth checking with them before you book.

Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to get help?

No. Many people come in for burnout, sleep problems, irritability or just not feeling like themselves. You don't need a diagnosis or a single "big" event to start therapy.

Does online therapy work with shift work?

It often makes it easier. Sessions are by video or phone, so you can join from home or wherever suits your schedule, without extra travel on top of long shifts.
